Mentoring Scheme

Mentoring

The Mens Room launched its national mentoring programmeat the 2005 1000 Man Crusade. This programme focuses on mentoring all young men, but in particular, young black men who are offenders or ex-offenders. Statistics indicate (September 2005) that UK prisons have a population of 74,000. Black men make up just under 50% of this population whilst only making up 2% of the UK populaiton (census 2001). We were delighted to have received the support and endorsment of ex-prisoner and cabinet minister Jonathan Aitken at the launch.
Mentoring has been described as one of the most powerful learning tools of our time. There are many men who simply do not have an individual who can help them come to terms with the challenges that life throws at them. These men welcome the opportunity to have someone that they can look up to and relate to.
A mentor is someone who is a coach, guide and friend. A mentor acts a positive role model and often confidante to the mentee. A mentoring programme will help the mentor and the person being mentored by providing insights into the role of each party.
